The gardens have a great range of initiatives, including chickens, a huge aquaponics system, water tanks, various styles of composting, wicking beds, along with plenty of different styles of garden beds.

Lunch will be provided, though you need to bring your own morning and afternoon tea. Don't forget your mug!

It was a VERY PRETTY VINTAGE MILLEFIORI BROOCH, and it would have been lovely to wear, except that the pin was broken.  Glenda, on the jewellery repair table, was able to remove the broken piece and fit a new fastening by breaking up a new fitting for the pin only.

Glenda has a stash of useful components, waiting for the right opportunity to be used. But what really made Glenda’s day, what put an extra smile on her face, was finding that the left over broken fitting was just the right size to effect next repair – on another vintage bone brooch, that belonged to a lost mum.  Two repairs of sentimental value – and no waste!

Glenda joins our regular group of volunteers at the Repair Café Sydney North to offer their advice and assistance to sharpen tools/kitchen knives, repair broken zips, sewing repair, shoe repair and wrangle recalcitrant household gadgets, etc.

Date: Repair Cafe Sunday 2 October (Café opens on first two Sundays of the month)
Time: 1pm to 3pm
Place: Chatswood South Uniting Church, Corner of Pacific Hwy and Mowbray Road

Permapatch Stall at Lane Cove Fair Sustainability Lane

The Lane Cove Fair will be held on Sunday 9 October 2016 and PermaPatch has committed to our usual presence at the Fair in the Sustainability Lane section.

Sign up to man the stall for for a couple of hours

For those who have not been involved previously, it is a nice day to chat with the community about the garden and get to know other members of PermaPatch. Most importantly, the Fair is a great fundraiser for the garden as we sell seedlings, plants and preserves.

Wild pollinator count

Join us for a wild pollinator count!

PermaPatch is joining in on the nation-wide Wild Pollinator Count to help document Australia’s wild pollinators. Let's get to know the wild pollinators in our garden, help out with some garden pottering, and finish up with a cuppa and cake.

We all know how important pollinators are – without them, much of the food we like eat would never fruit. However Australia has a huge number of native pollinators, like bees, wasps, ants, flies, butterflies etc whose pollination habits are not yet fully understood.

...many native insects contribute to pollination in crops and gardens all around the country. We still need to do a lot of research to identify all our insect pollinator species, understand their ecology and how they are affected by human activities. So far, we know that Australia has around 2,000 native bee species, all of which are important pollinators. We also know there are a couple of thousand butterfly, wasp, fly, moth, beetle, thrips and ant species, some of which are documented pollinators. Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of information on the ecology of many of these insects, what flowers they pollinate, or where they are found." Wild Pollinator Count

Note that pollinators don't like the rain. Unfortunately showers are forecast for the day so keep an eye on the weather. If we have any rain after 9am the Wild Pollinator Count will be called off. However our members' working bee will still go ahead.

Winter Warmer Pizza Day!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! With temperatures down to single digits who would not want to be warmed up by the fireside, or even better, a wood-fired pizza oven :-)

On the last Sunday this month, July 26, we will fire up the oven to celebrate winter in the garden! The motto of the day is to warm up from the inside. We will provide sizzling pizza and mulled wine to all members and their families, and those who'd like to become new members.

Please see below for details & RSVP via email to permapatch@permapatch.org.au.

As for past events, we will provide basic pizza ingredients such as dough/bases and standard toppings. Please bring any extra toppings you'd like. And to make sure you do get warm from the inside there will be mulled wine!

We look forward to seeing you on Sun, 26 July starting 1pm!
